Stressful Skin and How to Deal With It

There are many downsides to having a stressful life but one of the small kickers you might not have realised before is that it can have hugely negative effects on your skin.

Stress, you may be surprised to find out, has a chemical reaction within our bodies. This causes our hormones to become greatly unbalanced making our skin far more sensitive and reactive than it normally is.

Spots and Greasy Skin

One of the hormones produced during stress is Cortisol which, along with other hormones, forces our sebaceous gland to create more oil. This in turn makes our skin far greasier than normal and causes spontaneous outbreaks in spots.

Sometimes we can’t escape from a stressful situation. For instance perhaps you have a big meeting at work or are dealing with a family issue. When this happens you need to make sure you’re constantly taking care of your skin to help prevent any sudden outbreaks from occurring. Make sure you exfoliate and cleanse  your skin every day and that, before you leave the house in the morning, you give your face a good wash to remove any grease from the night before.

If you find you have a continual problem with spots and blackheads, our effective skin peel treatment in Birmingham could be just what you need.

Wearing You Down

Stress is also fantastic for wearing down our immune system. The Cortisol produced by our bodies also acts to shut down part of our immune system, making us more susceptible, especially in the winter months, to colds and flu-like illnesses.

The best way to tackle this is to make sure you keep yourself healthy. Eat a balanced diet and give yourself plenty of exercise (even if it is merely walking to the shops and back).

Damages to Your Skin

If you already suffer from skin issues such as eczema, cold sores or psoriasis, stress has a beautiful way of further irritating your skin and making these issues worse. Stress does this by drying out the protective surface layer of your skin, revealing raw skin cells beneath to the elements and inflaming your skin.

To tackle this problem you will be able to find skin specific creams and moisturisers to help calm down your skin issues. You can also help to try and relax yourself. Put time aside during your day for a bubble bath, read a book, go to bed a couple of hours earlier than you normally would and simply relax. If your skin problems persist, contact your GP for further advice.
