As a company that specialises in skin treatment in Birmingham, we can definitely appreciate the way nature changes our skin in a number of different ways – especially women.
There are a number of amazing things that happen to our bodies as women; pregnancy being one of the most poignant. Your body will go through a number of changes during pregnancy – apart from the growing bump!
It certainly has an impact on the skin – you’ll notice a number of changes. You may experience some or all of the following changes to your skin.
Pregnancy Glow
You’ve probably heard of the ‘pregnancy glow’ before. When someone is pregnant, they are often referred to as having a certain ‘glow’ – even if they don’t notice it themselves. However, it’s not just an old wives tale that people sprout out – it’s an actual real change that happens to your skin.
The increased volume of blood that you experience causes the cheeks to take on a blush – due to the increase of blood vessels under the surface of the skin. Also, the increased secretions of the oil glands, give your skin a somewhat waxy sheen.
A Breakout
If you thought your days of spots and pimples had been left behind with your teenage years, you might not be happy with this. The extra hormones that you have during pregnancy, lead to your oil glands creating more oil – which can cause an outbreak of spots. Whilst frustrating, this shouldn’t last forever. Your spots should disappear after delivery.
Some women who suffer with acne may find that their skin improves during the early stages of pregnancy, only to worsen later on.
Changing Skin Pigmentation
As we have said earlier, pregnancy means an increase in hormones, which causes your body to change in a number of different ways. Another change that increase hormones can cause is to do with your skin pigmentation.
You might start to notice that areas with darker pigmentation (freckles, moles, etc), become even darker. There is nothing that you can do to stop this from happening – just keep an eye on the area and contact a medical professional if you are worried.
Itchy Skin
As your bump grows, your skin becomes tighter as it gets stretched. Whilst this is natural, it can cause some issues to your skin. You may suffer with dryness of the skin, especially on the abdomen, which causes it to feel itchy and uncomfortable. You may also experience this on your hips and thighs too!
If your itchiness is accompanied by a rash – it’s probably heat rash. This is caused by your overheated body, dampness from perspiration, and the friction of skin running against your clothes (or itself).
For those who aren’t pregnant yet have experienced frustrating changes to their skin – we can help.
