When it comes to acne, it can be tempting to scrub your face excessively in the hope that it will prevent recurring spots. However, a lot of things you do to hide or try and prevent breakouts can actually be counterproductive.
Here at Fiona Clossick Facial Aesthetics we offer a range of skin treatments in Birmingham so we understand the importance of looking after your skin and keeping it in tip-top shape. Therefore, we’ve put together a list of best practices to prevent breakouts.
Don’t wash your face too often!
Although it may seem strange, washing your face more than twice a day can actually cause more harm than good. By stripping away your natural oils, your skin may create more and leave you with spots.
Instead, wash your face twice a day with warm water and a mild soap to avoid aggravating your skin. Also opt for a gentle face cloth over exfoliating gloves to prevent irritation and always make sure you dry your face with a clean towel so that you don’t spread bacteria.
Avoid touching your face
Resting your cheek or chin on your hands can spread bacteria and irritate your already inflamed skin, so don’t do it!
Never pick or pop pimples with your fingers as it can cause infections and scarring.
If you already have acne scars, skin peels can dramatically reduce the appearance.
Choose your makeup wisely
During a breakout you should try and avoid makeup altogether but if you do choose to wear it then make sure you wash it off properly at the end of the day.
Try and opt for cosmetics that say ‘noncomedogenic’ on the label as they are non-oily and won’t clog your pores.
Also take time to wash your makeup brushes once a week – run them under warm water, rub them with baby shampoo, rinse and then let them dry.
Be careful what products you put on your hair
As unrelated as it sounds, your hair can have a direct effect your skin.
If you have oily hair it can add to the oil on your face so tie it back if it’s long enough and wash it regularly with a gentle shampoo and conditioner.
Also try to avoid gels and other perfumed products as they can run onto your skin and block your pores.
